Yesterday was a double win of sorts for Telugu-ites; what with LV Revanth winning Indian Idol 9 and India’s Olympic 2016 silver medallist Sindhu PV avenging her Rio Games loss by beating Carolina Marin of Spain in straight games. She has now won her maiden Indian Open Super Series badminton title that was held at the Siri Fort Sports Complex in New Delhi.
The match between Sindhu and Carolina was almost a repeat of the Rio Olympic 2016 final which concluded with the Spaniard winning Gold at a hard-fought match. But here in her home base, PV Sindhu triumphed within 46 minutes showcasing a 21-19 and 21-16 win. This has been the second contest between the two shuttlers since the Rio final with the 21 year old Hyderabadi winning both. Sindhu has now equalised a 5-5 in career meetings with this win.
It was Carolina struggling with her net game that can reportedly be credited for the win on a partial level. But Sindhu has also received much accolades for her ever improving technique, especially in the cross-court net-game and defence. During the first match, Sindhu had gotten to a flying start opening up to a 6-1 lead but Carolina soon got her act together. But Sindhu also managed to up the ante and push Carolina into corners. The second game also saw Sindhu gain an upper hand early on.
With this win, Sindhu PV has not just dished out avenged her previous loss, but also proved that she has become fitter, stronger and more tactically aware than she had been in Brazil. She has also project that she will continue to challenge Carolina and Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying for world’s best women’s badminton exponent.
