Why is the South Indian Film Industry so underrated in India?

South Indian movies {Telegu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannad} have always been a topic of joke for many North Indians since a really long time. It has always been ‘yengad pongad’ movies and not Telugu and Tamil and all the blame goes to the translators of the movies who use absurd words and come up with such horrible titles. I mean, who would like to see movies named, ‘Bhaigiri 2’, ‘Dangerous Lover’, ‘Direct Dushmani’, ‘Vaamsi – The Warrior’ and ‘Joshila Bhaijaan'{LOL}.

I, being raised in Maharashtra, have never watched South Indian movies and have always laughed at the hideous translated songs. For most of the people raised in North Indian states, South Indian movies are all about Rajinikanth, coconuts or something that makes you question Physics. The beauty of these movies is realized once you see the original movie and not the dubbed one. No, I’m not talking about the fiction movies like ‘Baahubali’, ‘Eega’ or ‘Magadheera’. I’m talking about the movies that show case real love like ‘7/g Brundavan Colony’, ‘Shankarabharanam’, ‘Ghazi’, ‘Bichagadu’, ‘Rangam’, ‘Happy Days’, ‘Anand’, ‘Drishyam’ etc.

The beauty of South Indian movies hits you hard because most of these movies are relatable to our daily lives and the way ‘love’ is show cased in these movies is very delicate and beautiful. You rarely find these movies with borrowed story lines as these movies are hardly ‘inspired’ by Hollywood movies {pun entirely intended}. Even if the cinematography is over the top, the originality is their USP.

Hindi film industry have come up with a fad of making movies that are inspired from South Indian movies and such movies perform exceptionally well. Movies like Drishyam, Kick, Wanted, Hera Pheri, Biwi No.1 etc were all inspired from South India and are our all time favorite.

I accept that some movies do have weird stories and hideous songs but then it is unfair to judge the whole industry on the basis of few below average movies. South India has come up with some amazing films which even Bollywood cannot compete with. ‘The Ghazi Attack’ is a strong example of what South Indian movies are made of. Not to forget, Baahubali {even though it is fiction} is the most selling movie of India till date which also comes from the plate of South India.

Now you decide whether you want to enjoy REAL movies or you still want to squawk about funny dubbed songs and names. I mean, the choice is yours.
