In a chain of events, suicide bombers targeted the second holiest site for Muslims, the Saudi city of Medina. Four security guards have been killed and five injured in the suicide bombing that shook the city. The blast struck just as people were breaking their fast inside the mosque during this holy month of Ramadan. The attack was one of the several around the country of Saudi. The same time around the Medina blast, explosions struck at a Shia mosque and at the US Consulate in Jeddah. Responsibility has not been claimed for the Medina attack yet, but suspicions point towards ISIS.
In the past week alone, attacks have taken place at Istanbul Airport killing 45, a cafe in Dhaka killing 22 and a truck bomb in Baghdad leaving 165 dead. A suicide car bomb also took place at Baghdad on Sunday, killing more than 200 and leaving at least 175 wounded. Islamic State has claimed responsibility for this attack and the others mentioned above.
Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, tweeted: “It’s time we work together to save our religion from these deadly criminal gangs.”
The blasts have left Muslims around the world outraged and shaken. Our heart goes out to the friends and families of the victims. #PrayForMedina
