In the latest judgement over the Nirbhaya rape case, the Supreme Court has produced its ultimate discernment of death sentence to the four convicts out of six for raping and torturing a 23-year-old medical student on a bus in Delhi on December 16, 2012.
The three convicts out of six, namely, Mukesh, Pavan Gupta and Vinay Sharma, had appealed a plea for reducing the death sentence to life-term, on November 2017, against the Supreme Court judgement of hanging, declared in May 2017. The fourth convict, Akshay Kumar Singh, has not petitioned any plea against the decision.
While one convict, being a minor during the crime, was sent to a juvenile home from where he got released after a three-year term. The sixth convict, bus driver Ram Singh, killed himself in the prison cell.
The bench at the court said that there is no new material to review the death sentence.
As the Supreme Court has ruled out the convicts’ consideration, the only possible way for them to escape the hanging is by appealing for President’s mercy.
The rape case provoked rage and agitations nationwide leading to major changes in the laws of sexual assaults against women.
