Visakhapatnam is all set to play host to ‘Traditional Rice Mela’, which would be showcasing over 40 varieties of traditional rice from across India.
“Internationally, May is recognized as the month for awareness on Biological Diversity and
Endangered Species. Thus we are conducting a Traditional Rice Mela on 5 May 2018
(Saturday) from 4.00 PM to 8.30 PM at Sumaja Ecowellness – The Organic Shoppe premises,
#7-5-42, Pandurangapuram, Near Officer’s Club, Visakhapatnam.
The Rice Mela will continue on 6 May 2018 (Sunday) from 4.00 PM to 8.30 PM at Sumaja
Ecowellness – The Organic Shoppe premises, The Hindu Newspaper Road, TPT Colony,
Seethammadhara, Visakhapatnam.
India was home to over One Lakh rice varieties till around 1960. Now, most of the traditional rice
varieties are lost. This is considered as one of the greatest genetic losses in agro-biodiversity. The
Rice Mela is being conducted as a tribute to our indigenous varieties of Rice, which has been our
food for thousands of years. The Rice Mela will have an exhibition cum sale of traditional and rare
varieties of rice from across India “, said an official press note.
