Checks have been conducted to nab those travellers without train tickets in Visakhapatnam. Intensive checks were done, led by Assistant Commercial Managers, Waltair, Sukhram Horo and Jayant Pipplai.
In the last two days numerous checks took place in 32 trains at Srikakulam Road, Bobbili stations and in Palasa-Duvvada. A total number of 649 ticketless travellers were detected. Amongst the 649 were those with irregular tickers and unbooked luggage also. An amount of Rs 2.26 lakh was collected from the same as fare and penalty.
Checks were specially conducted at the Palasa-Duvvada main-line and Vizianagaram-Rayagada section. During these checks 546 ticketless travellers were found and the irregular tickets generated an amount of Rs 1.88 lakh as fare and penalty.
It is common to see people travelling on trains without tickets in India. In fact, over the years, it has even become an unofficial sport of sorts to devise innovative ways to evade the ticket collector in a moving train. In fact, in India, more than 1.9 crore railway passengers were found all over the country to have been travelling without tickets in 2015-16.
While the most amount of ticketless passengers have been caught in the Northern Zone, the Southern Zone comes a close second. In 2016-17, the number till Feb 2017 has already touched a whopping 1.85 crore from Northern, Southern and Central Zones alone.
