A mock drill on Tsunami was organised in Visakhapatnam on Friday between 9.30 am and 1.30 pm. The event was jointly organised by National Disaster Management Authority, Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the local district administration.
Representatives from 11 countries including the Marshall Islands, Fiji Islands, and Samoa, were also present at the event.
The mock drill’s primary agenda was to create awareness in the states on the east coast. The volunteers from NDRF, CRPF, Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force, Police, Fire Services, Homeguards, GVMC, and several other bodies assembled at the Andhra University Engineering grounds. The men, who were ready with the required material and equipment, rushed to Pedajalaipeta, a fishermen’s colony on the beach, as soon as they were intimated by the officials.
The officials informed that the mock drill was conducted in the places that are prone to certain risks due to the after-effects of the earthquake in the Nicobar islands.
The volunteers who participated in this drill were given instructions on activities such as alerting people, shifting them to cyclone relief centres, rescuing those drowning in the seas, first aid, shifting the affected by 108 ambulance service, providing basic amenities, and others.
As per a report in The Hindu, NDMA Joint Advisor Dhirendra Singh Siddhu gave a detailed account of the manner in which the drill was carried out.
