Political biopics seem to be the hot potatoes of the season in Indian cinema. From charting inspiring life-stories and projecting the heroics of popular leaders to stirring up unwanted controversies and raging debates, these political potboilers promise us a whole lot to look forward to. Here are 6 such political biopics that have gathered interest at regional and national levels.

#1 NTR

Based on the life story of popular Telugu actor-turned-politician, Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, NTR marks the first big Telugu release of 2019. While the first part, NTR: Kathanayakudu, will chart his journey as an actor, the second part, NTR: Mahanayakudu, will showcase his rise to fame as an iconic political leader.

#2 Thackeray

The much-anticipated biopic will be charting the journey of one of Maharashtra’s favourite leaders, Bal Thackeray. Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead role, the film, which will be releasing on 25 January, has already given a glimpse of what’s in store with its power-packed trailer.

#3 The Accidental Prime Minister

Be it for Anupam Kher’s striking resemblance to Dr Manmohan Singh, setting social media abuzz with opinions or even for disappearing briefly from Youtube, The Accidental Prime Minister’s trailer has made the headlines ever since its release. The film is one of the much-awaited political biopics, given its likely relevance on the scene of national politics.

#4 Yatra

Yet another biopic on one of Andhra Pradesh’s famous politicians, YS Rajasekhara Reddy, Yatra will be hitting the screens this political season in the Telugu states. The film, which is slated to release on 8 February, is being directed by Mahi V Raghav of ‘Anando Brahma’ fame.
