Political biopics seem to be the hot potatoes of the season in Indian cinema. From charting inspiring life-stories and projecting the heroics of popular leaders to stirring up unwanted controversies and raging debates, these political potboilers promise us a whole lot to look forward to. Here are 6 such political biopics that have gathered interest at regional and national levels.
Based on the life story of popular Telugu actor-turned-politician, Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, NTR marks the first big Telugu release of 2019. While the first part, NTR: Kathanayakudu, will chart his journey as an actor, the second part, NTR: Mahanayakudu, will showcase his rise to fame as an iconic political leader.
The much-anticipated biopic will be charting the journey of one of Maharashtra’s favourite leaders, Bal Thackeray. Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead role, the film, which will be releasing on 25 January, has already given a glimpse of what’s in store with its power-packed trailer.
Be it for Anupam Kher’s striking resemblance to Dr Manmohan Singh, setting social media abuzz with opinions or even for disappearing briefly from Youtube, The Accidental Prime Minister’s trailer has made the headlines ever since its release. The film is one of the much-awaited political biopics, given its likely relevance on the scene of national politics.
Yet another biopic on one of Andhra Pradesh’s famous politicians, YS Rajasekhara Reddy, Yatra will be hitting the screens this political season in the Telugu states. The film, which is slated to release on 8 February, is being directed by Mahi V Raghav of ‘Anando Brahma’ fame.
Piquing interest among the common audience and political fraternity of Tamil Nadu is the biopic of the state’s former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. Titled ‘The Iron Lady’, the film stars Nithya Menon in the titular role. The film’s first look was unveiled recently to a warm response from the fans.
The latest one of the political biopics to hit the news, Narendra Modi’s biopic will be featuring actor Vivek Oberoi in the role of India’s Prime Minister. The first look of the film will be released on 7 January while the filming will begin from mid-Jan.
