Anna canteens, which would be offering food at cheaper prices, are fast approaching the completion stage in Visakhapatnam. Each constitution in the city would be bearing an Anna Canteen in the first phase.
As per the plan, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is planning to open Anna canteens at eight different places in the city. The canteens would be established in cities with the population of more than 50,000. They would be providing breakfast, lunch and dinner for Rs 5 each. The canteens would be operated by Akshaya Patra Foundation to provide food from each canteen to at least 350 people per day.
The canteens in the first phase would be located at Chittivalasa in Bheemili, near NTR Hospital in Anakapalli, MVP Colony, Nammidoddi, Chinagantyada, Mulagada, Turner’s Choultry, VIMS Sanjay Gandhi Colony in Visakhapatnam, Visakha Regional Eye Hospital, Marripalem, old fruit market and near GVMC Hospital in Sriharipuram.
In the aspects of quantity, 400 gms of rice, 250 gms of Upma or Pongal, 3 Idlis or Pooris, 15 gms of chutney or podi, 150 gms of sambhar or dal, 100 gms of vegetarian curry, 15 gms of pickle and 75 gms of curd would be provided in the canteens.
The canteens would also be facilitated with the Internet, an LED TV in a huge hall.
Andhra Pradesh government grants Rs 36 Lakhs for each Anna canteen and Rs 9.70 Lakhs each for construction. Tata Consultancy would be taking care of the construction and would be established in an area of 750 sq ft. The canteens would be open for 6 days in the week and be closed on Sundays.
