It is a known fact that the pollution in the city is on the rise and the need of the hour is to adopt newer technologies and measures so as to avoid further repercussions. As a step towards the introduction of electric vehicles in Visakhapatnam, the government is considering to install electric charging stations in the city. Working towards the same, the officials at EPDCL (Eastern Power Distribution Company of AP Ltd) have also started chalking out the necessary plans.
While the talks are still at an early stage, the EPDCL officials have proposed the tariff system for the electricity to be supplied to the electric charging stations that will soon be coming up in the city. It has been learned that the primary proposal is to charge Rs 6.95 per a unit of electricity supplied. Similar power stations in Maharashtra and Delhi are charging Rs 6.81 and Rs 7.63 per unit respectively.
Can Visakhapatnam lead the way?
The central government plans to increase the number of electric vehicles in India by the year 2030. Trying to achieve the same, the state government wants to bring these vehicles onto the streets of Visakhapatnam as early as possible. In fact, a few companies have already expressed their interest in launching their e-vehicles in the state.
As a step towards curbing the harmful effects of vehicular pollution, GVMC has already announced the launch of e rickshaws onto the streets of Visakhapatnam. Also, Andhra Pradesh government signed an MoU with the automobile manufacturing giant Toyota to launch e-Vehicles in the state’s capital of Amaravati.
