Much like any other city in India, Visakhapatnam too, loves its cricket. Be it for providing a breeding ground to many talented youngsters or standing special to many acclaimed international superstars, Visakhapatnam holds a special place in the state cricket. Over the years, the cricket lovers in the city have had the privilege of witnessing some exceptional innings. With the stage set for India vs West Indies ODI on 24 October, we look back at two such innings that will always be remembered by the cricket fans in Visakhapatnam.
It was in Visakhapatnam that one of India’s favourite cricketing sons announced himself to the world in 2005. Relatively new to international cricket back then, Dhoni had his task cut out when he walked out to bat against arch-rivals Pakistan. However, what followed would be etched in the memories of the fans for ages. Dhoni launched an onslaught against the Pakistani bowlers and battered them to all corners of the ground. The man from Jharkhand went on to score his maiden ODI century as India thrashed Pakistan in the game.
India’s Captain Marvel too holds fond memories at the Dr Y.S Rajasekhar Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. Playing the mighty Aussies in 2010, the then-flamboyant young gun led India’s cause in a daunting run chase. Thanks to his blistering 118 that tore the Australian bowling apart, the men in blue cruised home to victory and successfully sealed the three-match ODI series. The innings was one of Virat Kohli’s initial centuries and gave a glimpse of what was to come!
