In what came as a shocker, the officials of the vigilance and enforcement department, on Monday, found that rotten eggs were being served to students at a few Zilla Parishad schools in Visakhapatnam. As a part of their surprise raids at the ZP schools at Gopalapatnam, Vepagunta, and Pendurthi, in Visakhapatnam, the concerned officials observed the boiled eggs being served as part of the Mid-day meal programme at the schools, were in a rotten state.
As reported by Times of India, the members of the food-tasting committees at these schools showed little interest in taking the required measures to ensure the quality of the food that was served to the students. The report further claims that the vigilance officials noticed the use of expired cooking oil packets.
Owing to the poor quality of the food being served at the schools, the majority of the students preferred getting lunch from home. Of the 949 students enrolled at the school, 614 were present on Monday. Among them, just 104 students ate the mid-day meal at the school. During the raid, the officials found that the quality of food was poor, which made many students either skip lunch or get food from home, which defeated the very purpose of the scheme.
Additionally, irregular maintenance of records and other lapses were noticed at these schools in Vizag. Vigilance DSP K Sravani said the irresponsibility of the school staff cooks was to be blamed for the poor quality of food. A report, containing the findings, will soon be submitted to the government, she further informed.
