In a span of 24 hours, between Friday and Saturday, Vizag witnessed 289 fresh coronavirus cases and 3 more deaths due to the infection caused by the dreaded virus. As per the coronavirus update received this morning, the tally in the Vizag district rose to 52,838. Of these, 2824 cases are active while 49,575 have been marked discharged and 439 patients passed away.
The latest coronavirus update, issued by Special COVID-19 Officer, PV Sudhakar, revealed that Vizag currently has 8 very active clusters, 64 active clusters, 245 dormant clusters, and 627 de-notified clusters.
Vizag recorded its first coronavirus case on 19 March. While the numbers seemed to be on the lower side initially, cases soon began to spike in the subsequent months. It may be recalled that the district even reported over 1200 positive cases in a single day, raising serious concerns among citizens. While October has once again been witnessing the numbers come down, experts have cautioned against letting the guard down. With more relaxations coming into effect with the recently announced Unlock 5.0, citizens have been urged to continue wearing masks, maintain physical distancing, and follow stringent hygiene measures to minimise the risk of contracting coronavirus.
Meanwhile, India recorded 73,272 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours. 79% of these are from 10 States and UTs. Maharashtra is still reporting a very high number of new cases with more than 12,000 cases followed by Karnataka with nearly 11,000 cases. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, and Odisha are among the other states that have contributed the majority to the cases reported across the country in the said period. The country reported 926 deaths in a single day, with Maharashtra accounting for 302 of them.
To the brighter side, the active cases have maintained a downtrend. “India continues to report a trend of steadily declining active cases. For the second day after the active cases dropped below the 9L mark after a month, the progressive decline continues. India’s active caseload stands at 8,83,185 today. Presently the active cases comprise merely 12.65% of the total positive cases of the country. These are nearly 1/8th of the total cases in the country,” the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Saturday.
