The Mudasarlova reservoir in Vizag was recently equipped with the much-awaited floating solar power plant. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu inaugurating the plant during his recent visit to the city.
A part of the Smart City initiative, the floating solar power plant has been built over 20 acres, with an investment of around Rs 11.36 crores. With a capability to generate about 2MW of power, the plant is deemed as the country’s biggest floating solar power plant.
GVMC has recently posted a video of this power plant. In the video, it is explained that GVMC would save about Rs 50,000 day while generating 2MW of energy in this eco-friendly way, thereby, recovering the investment made in nearly six years time.
It has also bee informed that the floating solar plant has been designed and constructed to withstand several factors such as varying wind speed and changing levels of the reservoir, among others.

Floating solar panels are now gaining a lot of popularity across the world. Their advanced technology is helping the world look at renewable energy in a new light. These solar panels can be deployed in cities to save land space and utilise water bodies such as lakes or reservoirs which they can shade the water thus reducing evaporation.
The solar panels will be mounted on top of the floaters which will hover on the water. They are deemed to have higher efficiency over the ground installed panels due to the cooler temperature of the water, thus providing better performance.
