Ganesh puja , a festival marked with devotion and spirituality has now become a mere competition for people in the country. Like the previous years, Vizag is yet again gearing up for the festival by getting the tallest Ganesha idol this year. The height of the idol is yet to be decided. According to the sources, this year’s idol will be a foot taller than the tallest idol in the country.
The Mahaganapathi Youth Association has plans to install a 110 ft Ganesha idol. Bojjala Trimurtulu, Chairman of the association said, “We have contacted the contractors from Tirupati, West Bengal, Kerala and Odisha for the construction of the idol and the platform”. He added that they will finalise the contractor and start the work as soon as possible. Last year around 40 lakhs were spent for the event and around 15 lakhs were profited through various sources including donations. This year the organisation is planning to spend more than last year.
Another member of the association said that they want Vizag to be significant during the festival and have decided to wear a special vinayaka mala. The organisers conducted the puja at Alwardas stadium at MVP Colony on 16th July’2016 which was also attended by Visakhapatnam East MLA Velagapudi Ramakrishna Babu.
The association is also planning to break records at offering the largest laddu to the idol. The devotees suggested to take proper measures so as not to repeat the September 2011 incident where the idol collapsed before its immersion.
