The much-awaited hovercraft rides in Vizag, which were expected to be launched in the first week of May, are likely to be delayed.
Speaking to Yo! Vizag, Hoverdock Managing Director, D Chaitanya Varma, said, “Since the locale has to be developed, it would probably take a month or two before the hovercraft rides get fully operational. While the hovercrafts are ready to go, the availability of infrastructure, the supply of electricity, water and other amenities, which are crucial for the maintenance of the craft, are posing as challenges.”
Varma also informed that once the primary facilities have been arranged for, a garage for sheltering the hovercrafts will be set up in a dedicated space.
“The hovercrafts, which will be a major tourist attraction, will be the first of its kind in India. We have provided the requisite training for class 2 tug masters for efficiently handling the machines, once they start operating for the public,” Varma further informed.
The hovercraft project in Visakhapatnam is a result of a deal struck during the CII Partnership Summit in 2016. The company had procured 4 machines from Russia to give the citizens some enthralling rides over the city’s waters. While one hovercraft is equipped with a seating capacity of seven people, the remaining three will be accommodating five people each. The tickets would be priced between Rs 300 and Rs 350, it has been learned.
Popular in the countries of Australia, New Zealand, England, and Russia among others, this activity in Vizag will be the first of its kind in India.
