One problem that has been pestering all of us is that of the sale of products even after their expiry date. Consumption of these products might cause severe health problems to the consumers. Even though the authorities have been adopting strict measures to curb this, there are still some prevalent cases. Another such incident from the city came to light on Wednesday.
The details of stocking food over expiry date
The Vigilance and Enforcement department, along with Food safety wing of GVMC and Civil supplies officials conducted raids over Tirumala and P.Suryakumari agencies located in Madhavadhara. The officials raided three godowns belonging to this agency. In these raids, the officials got hold of many food products that were well over their expiry dates. The food products included badam milk powder, chocolates, sugar, oil packets and others.
The Superintendent of Police of Viligance and Enforcement Department, Mr. D. Koteswara Rao provided further details. He informed that these agencies were supplying food products to various stores and temples. The officials have seized stock worth Rs 3 lakhs and have also sent samples to Hyderabad’s food control section to test the quality of them.
The owner of the agency, Ganesh, was taken into custody and is being interrogated for further details. Furthermore, the SP also stated that the agency had three godowns in the same area which is against the rules. These godowns will be seized for conducting operations by breaking the rules.
Care to be taken from the customer’s end
While purchasing any product from the market, please make sure to check its expiry date. In fact, some shopkeepers might fill the front rows with older stock to get rid of them quickly. It’s better to estimate how long that product might be in use for you and gauge if the remaining days for its expiry would be sufficient. If available, try to check the sell by date provided on the product.
Also, try to use the perishable products as soon as possible without stocking them for long.
