Around one lakh sapling would be planted along the railway tracks in Vizag as a part of Green India Mission. Nearly 100 km of tracks would be covered in the first phase.
Joining hands with the state forest department, the railways would be getting the plants required for the programme and tracks. On a pilot basis, works have started on a 14 km stretch in Srikakulam
district.Around 7,000 saplings have been provided by the Srikakulam Forest Department and nearly 6,000 saplings have already been planted along the track from Tilaru to Kotabommali station.
Speaking to TOI, Waltair divisional railway manager MS Mathur said that they are on plans to plant more trees to cover 100kms tracks which lack greenery.
While mentioning about the Green India Mission launched by the Central Government, Mathur added, ” The drive had been taken up in some areas on an experimental basis. We would cover the rest of the tracks soon.”
One of the officials mentioned, “Usually, people who live close to the railway tracks encroach upon the railway properties. This will be curbed.”
