According to the Urban Sustainable Index and Dashboard, launched by the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog), Vizag ranked 18th in the country in Sustainable Development Goals Urban Index. From the Telugu speaking states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, other cities that featured on the list were Hyderabad, which ranked 22nd, and Vijayawada, which ranked 30th, in the Urban Sustainable Development Index.
On 23 November, 2021, NITI Aayog, in its journey towards localizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and instituting robust SDG progress monitoring systems at the national, State/UT, and local levels, has achieved yet another milestone with the launch of the inaugural SDG Urban Index & Dashboard. The index and dashboard are a result of the NITI Aayog-GIZ and BMZ collaboration focused on driving SDG localization in our cities, under the umbrella of Indo-German Development Cooperation.
The SDG Urban Index and Dashboard ranks 56 urban areas on 77 SDG indicators across 46 targets of the SDG framework. The data on these indicators have been sourced from official data sources such as the National Family Health Survey (NFHC), National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), U-DISE, data portals of various ministries, and other government data sources.
For each SDG, the urban areas are ranked on a scale of 0-100. A score of 100 implies that the urban area has achieved the targets set for 2030; a score of 0 implies that it is the farthest from achieving the targets among the selected urban areas. Cities with a score of 0-49 are identified as lagging behind, those with a score of 50-64 performed somewhat better and those with a score of 65-99 were considered front runners. Overall or composite urban area scores are then generated from the Goal-wise scores to measure the aggregate performance of the urban area.
The Sustainable Urban Development Urban Index ranked Visakhapatnam 18th in the country with a score of 68.14. Shimla has been ranked #1, with an SDG score of 75.50.
