The UK-India Joint Network on Sustainable Cities chose Visakhapatnam among six cities in the country for bringing about significant improvement in the quality of life thereby achieving higher happiness index.
Urban observatories to be setup to ensure implementation of sustainable technologies. The newly formed network is all set to embed this as one of its focus. According to the reports, Prof. Michele Clarke, principal investigator from UK for the network and Associate Pro Vice Chancellor of University of Nottingham stated that they would depute domain experts for implementation of various eco-friendly technologies. Clarke further added that they would need smart management with smart response from the smart denizens.
Besides Visakhapatnam, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Chennai and Kochi have been selected for assistance under the joint network. With Visakhapatnam being selected as the smart city, it has been gaining a lot of attention in the recent years and hence efforts on improving the standard of living with sustainable technologies and benchmarking various parameters will be a continuous process.
Urban planning, sanitation, traffic management, solid waste management and other parameters would be taken care of and necessary changes can be made in the parameters to make Visakhapatnam one of the best smart cities in the country.
The new UK-India Joint Network on Sustainable Cities and Urbanisation in India was launched on 26 September. The multidisciplinary collaboration is led by the UK’s University of Nottingham and the National Institute of Urban Affairs in India, and is supported by the Newton Fund and delivered in partnership with Research Councils UK.
From India there are urban researchers from Jawaharlal Nehru University, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, Indian Institute of Population Studies Mumbai, Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research Mumbai, Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bengaluru and Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai from India.
