In a move to ensure safety for women, the Transport Department is undertaking various measures to provide women and girls safer transport. Citing transport being key to making trafficking possible or impossible, the move to ensure surveillance in this area top priority. The target for women safety currently are the buses and autos.
Starting with school going children’s safety, it is mandated for autos and buses plying school children to be registered with school authorities. The schools share the responsibility of the children’s security by maintaining records of the various buses and autos and the drivers of these vehicles. The details should be furnished with the digital records maintained by the Government authorities. The personal details such as AADHAR card number and license and mobile numbers of the drivers must be kept up to date and diligently maintained by the school authorities.
All the bus stops and bus stands must be equipped with digital surveillance devices and a proposal for women having dedicated buses in peak hours is being proposed. SHE teams for patrolling and on site help will be deployed to enhance security for ladies.
Public help desks will be set up soon and all public places will be sensitized towards the issue and urged to report to authorities in case of suspicious activities. These initiatives come very welcome at a time when women’s safety has become top priority. Towards this end the quantum of efforts can never be too much.
