Connecting People to Nature – World Environment Day 2017 Celebrations Across the Globe

June 5 is celebrated as World Environment Day every year. This year’s theme is “connecting people to nature”. As you read, every country is celebrating this day in their own unique way. Let’s have a look at what everyone is doing to mark this day:

India

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his speech today emphasized his commitment to nurturing a better planet. According to him, we are nature and nature is us. This year’s theme is another way to connect people with their own selves. He has always been a person who believes in sustainable development and his initiative of garbage disposal system

deserves thumbs up!

Canada

United Nations chose Canada as its host for today’s celebrations. The event today aims to encourage awareness and action for protection of the environment worldwide. June 5 also marks the 150th birth anniversary of the country representing the pride and sense of identity the Canadian people draw from their incredible natural heritage.

Australia

Australia’s own CSIRO has launched a brand new research centre focusing on the ‘ocean hemisphere’. It hopes to further understand how the climate works, and how it may change in the future.

China

MEP announced the theme for this year’s World Environment Day on Apr. 27 – “Lucid Waters and Lush Mountains are Invaluable Assets”, with an aim to mobilize all walks of life to firmly establish the awareness that “Lucid Waters and Lush Mountains are Invaluable Assets”, to respect, comply with, and protect the nature, to voluntarily adopt a green lifestyle, and to work together to build China into a beautiful country.

France

In the city of Nevers, an Israeli-developed solar-energy tree which converts sunlight into power was “planted” a few days ago. Developed by Israeli firm Sologic, the eTree is a smart, solar-powered unit designed as a tree. This independent, self-sufficient scenic element is a sculpture of sorts that’s powered by solar panels located on its top, which are designed like square leaves. It’s also dubbed “The Solar Giving Tree,” after the famous Shel Silverstein children’s book. Besides producing energy from the sun to power the unit’s USB charging ports, the solar panels atop the eTree provide shade during the day and illumination at night for all those who pause for a relaxing moment under its branches. The eTree also offers a water fountain, free Wi-Fi, an LCD screen for surfing the internet, electrical outlets and benches. There’s even a trough filled with water for your dog! The tree is 4.5-meter high, weighs 1.25 kilograms and has total capacity of 1,400 Watts.

These are a few countries celebrating World Environment Day 2017 in good spirit, even though US Prime Minister Donald Trump exited from the Paris Agreement earlier in the week!
